Fremont, Michigan

Fremont is located in western Newaygo County and bordered on the southwest by Fremont Lake, where many of its residents live. Fremont is the largest city in Newaygo County and is supported by a diverse economic base including many small businesses and medium-to-large sized manufacturing facilities. It is also the home of the Gerber Baby Food Company and the corporate headquarters of a major insurance company.

Fremonts first settler was Daniel R. Joslin, who built a cabin here in 1854, calling it "Elm Corners." In 1855, Daniel Weaver became the first postmaster and he named the town Weaversville. During 1862, in the escalation of the Civil War, it was renamed "Fremont Center," after the Union General: John Charles Fremont, who once had been the Republican Partys Presidential candidate in the election of 1856. It was incorporated as a village in 1875 and later as a city as "Fremont" in 1911.
