Garden City was named just after World War I when it was developed as a suburban community for autoworkers looking for houses with lots large enough for gardens. Indeed the name of the area is derived from its residents' long-time interest in landscaping and gardening. Recreation is also an important part of the Garden City Community. Garden City enjoys parks with outdoor swimming and wading pools, horseshoe pits, ball diamonds, and tennis, racquetball and basketball courts. And Their Maplewood Community Center's facilities include a gym, a weight room, a putting green, game room, kitchen and meeting room. Garden City is a quiet suburb whose residents are civic and social-minded.
