Hancock, Michigan

The city of Hancock was named after John Hancock, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

In 1846 a log cabin was built to hold the Ruggles mineral claim. A man by the name of Christopher C. Douglas owned the land and came to live on it in 1852. Later he sold the land to the company he worked for; the Quincy Mining Company. In 1859 another agent of the company platted the town.

Lewis F. Leopold became Hancock's first postmaster in 1860. Hancock was incorporated as a village in 1875 and as a city in 1903.
