Kaleva, Michigan

Kaleva is located in eastern Manistee County in Maple Grove Township. This town, settled by Finnish immigrants in the early 1900s was founded by Jacob Saari and John Haksluto from Brooklyn, New York, commissioned then by the Michigan Land Society. In 1902, the then Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized there, which became the center of culture for the entire community. An interesting historical feature of the town is the Bottle House, where John J. Makinen, owner of the Northwestern Bottling Works, built a home of over 60,000 pop bottles, laid on their sides with bottom ends out. This building still stands and is part of the Federal Historical Register. It can be seen just one block north of the center of town.
