Litchfield is located at the junction of M-99 and M-49 in the northwest corner of Hillsdale County. It has a small economic base mainly supported by auto parts manufacturing: car window regulators and exhaust systems, to name a few. Other manufacturing includes materials handling racks and tooling. The headwaters of the St. Joseph River flow through here, and can be seen from the park on the south side of town.

Litchfield was first named Smithville in 1836, when one of its early settlers, David Smith registered the land in 1836. In 1837 when the post office opened, another early settler to the area, Henry Stevens, renamed it Litchfield after the city of the same name in Connecticut, where many residents had come from. It was incorporated as a village in 1877.
