House named the city Mendon in 1844, and it was officially platted a year later. In 1858, it was given a station on the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad, leading to its steady growth. It was eventually incorporated into a village in 1875.

Mendon retains its small-town atmosphere today with old style street lighting and a brick walkway to the park by the St. Joseph River. It has several small stores, businesses and resorts. Canoeing is also popular here, with several landings dotted along the river.
