Morenci is located on the southwest border of Lenawee County on M-156. The southern boundary of the village is also the Ohio state line. It has a population of about 3000, and receives its economic support primarily from agriculture, small business and a small industrial base located to the west of town.

Morenci was first settled in 1835 when William Sutton built a sawmill and a tavern here. Around the same time, Japheth Whitman built a general store and became the towns first postmaster, naming it Morenci. It received a station on the Lake Shore & Southern Michigan Railroad in the 1860s, which helped it grow to where it incorporated as a village in 1871. It was eventually incorporated as a city in 1934.
