Missaukee County was named after a prominent Indian Chief, Nesaukee, which means: "Large Mouth of the River." It was organized in 1871, with Lake City beating Falmouth by one vote at that time in becoming the county seat. It thrived during the lumber days until 1895, when the eastern half was engulfed by a large fire, destroying some of Michiganís oldest White Pine timber in the region.

Today, Missaukee County is probably best known for being Michiganís headquarters for Christmas trees. Just pick almost any road, and youíre bound to see rows and rows of them: carefully trimmed and groomed. There is also a thriving farm belt near Lucas and McBain on the southwestern end, rich in corn, feed and livestock.

Missaukee County is also a great vacation spot, and home to Lake Missaukee, a true inland lake jewell. The Muskegon River also winds its way through the pristine countryside of Enterprise and Holland Townships. And the fishingís good, too!

Whether youíre out for a vacation or just a drive, címon up and enjoy a little bit of "Godís Country."
