Blissfield lies in southeastern Lenawee County in the township of the same name. It is located on US-223, about 8 miles from the Ohio border. Its adjacent location to Adrian, just 10 miles northwest, and Toledo, Ohio -- 15 miles southeast, makes it an ideal place to live for commuters. It is also supported by some small industry, including heating and refrigeration, and agriculture. A local railroad, the Adrian & Blissfield, runs freight from the elevator as well as a tourist passenger train from the historic downtown area, where Victorian style, turn-of-the-century buildings contain unique shops and stores.

Blissfield s first settler, William Kedzie from Delhi, New York, made the first government land purchase here along the River Raisin in 1824. Later that same year, he sold it to Henry Bliss, from neighboring Monroe County. Bliss officially organized the Township in 1827. Later in 1838 the town received a station on the Lakeshore & Michigan Southern Railroad, and Bliss became the first postmaster. The town was later organized as a village in 1875.
