Lake Odessa is a pleasant community in southwestern Ionia County, situated on beautiful Jordan Lake. It consists primarily of small businesses along with some agriculture-related industry and food processing facilities. This area was originally referred to as the Russell Settlement when in 1839 the five Russell Brothers were the first pioneers there. A post office was later authorized under the name of "Bonanza." In 1889, it was changed to Lake Odessa, named after the township, and moved a couple of miles to the present location to accommodate being along side of the Pere Marquette, (later C & O), Railroad, which played a key part in the area's growth.
