Sylvan Lake is located in Central Oakland County on the northern edge of what is referred to as the Lakes Area. Named for its location on Sylvan Lake, it first took its place on the map in 1881 when it was made a station by the Grand Trunk Railroad. It was eventually organized as a village in 1921, with the Post Office opening in 1922. It was later organized as a city in 1946.

Today, Sylvan Lake remains a well-cared for suburb of the Detroit area, featuring pleasant living with its homes neatly situated around the lake.
